When you are planning a vacation, what do you envision? Vacations represent assorted things to assorted people. Some people like to paint the town red while quite a few others would enjoy nothing more than to pass the time getting some relaxation at the hotel pool. If you are wishy-washy like me, you prefer a part of both of them. On the one hand, because I have found myself someplace unique, I must view some sights. Of course, if ALL my time is spent heading from site to site, when I return home I will want a second vacation to recover. No matter what your ideal vacation looks like, this article will help you move in the right direction when planning your trip to Rhode Island. The first thing which you should do is handle as much in the beginning as you can. That means things like switching currency when you need to, examining maps of the local area, leasing a means of transportation (did someone say Harley?), reserving a flight, and locating a hotel that fits your demands. As luck would have it, all of these tasks have become more convenient and cheaper through the internet, so before contacting a travel agent, you might save some dough by looking up good deals on the web. When it comes to getting the right hotel, always remember to look at your choices carefully. Things to consider might be how it ranks; is it a 3 star hotel or a four star one? Where is it's location? If you are traveling to Disneyland but your hotel is in San Diego, you are going to waste a large amount of your journey behind the wheel. Are you planning on staying at the hotel quite a bit, and if you are going to be there, what type of conveniences do they furnish? I believe that I will never forget the time I went out on vacation to relax by the pool, only to find out that the property I was at didn't have one. I am sure that I must've appeared very odd walking around the hotel with my inflatable ducky around my waist and no pool to be found. The next item to consider is what to pack. The general rule-of-thumb is not to go overboard. Keep it simple, traveler. Start by familiarizing yourself with the weather conditions so that you know what your system need to pack, but avoid over-packing. Remember, if you forget something, odds are that you can purchase a replacement. As a matter of fact, take as few clothes as possible. I suggest packing older clothing which can be discarded along the way. Depending on where you are, you may discover charities that would be happy to take extra clothing off of your hands. Besides, this will make more room for souvenirs. When it comes to entertainment, avoid getting too out-of-control. For instance, don’t pack more than one book. If you are able to read an entire book, give that one away and go buy another one. It’s time to get out and go to the store anyway, you bookworm.

Instead, bring something to take notes with and write your own book. This does not necessarily mean the company laptop. Do not use this rule as an excuse to bring your work with you. If at all possible, leave every thought of work behind when you travel. Though it might seem awkward at first, pencil and paper work fine for taking notes. During your travel time, be sure and bring something to occupy the kids. There are lots of travel games out there, and no, I am not talking about the Game Boy. As a matter of fact, I strongly encourage taking a step back from technology. Though it may be your last stand, discourage the kids from packing a walkman, video game systems, television or portable DVD player. Kids get enough of that already. This is a perfect time to get to know those strangers in the back seat while teaching them to survive without their standard forms of entertainment. Maybe they will even learn to appreciate the world. And if their grades were not up to par this year, make them listen to your music along the way. You should see a dramatic improvement in grades next time around. Two significant items to think about including in what you take are Pepto-Bismol, in case something does not agree with you, and hand sanitizer; the kind that doesn’t require water. Just remember, no matter what situation you find yourself in, do not let the sanitizer replace taking a shower. When you are departing to Rhode Island, you and your family will regret it if you don't carry lots of supplies for picture taking. If you are behind the times and still use film, consider stepping up to a digital camera. Nothing is more disappointing to me than when I get back from a trip and discover that some of the pictures didn't turn out. With a digital camera, I can see what I am taking as I go along. The only things I need are batteries and memory space. Now that you can get a good digital camera for under $200, your excuses are dwindling. Numerous tourist locations have stores that will transfer your pictures from your memory card to a CD, allowing you to take even more pictures to torment friends and family with when you come home. I can't stress enough the value in keeping things elementary. Prepare wisely by taking care of everything you can at the start. When planning to travel, remember, the internet is your friend. Pack, plan, and keep entertainment basic to help ensure that your vacation to Rhode Island is a relaxing and memorable one. I hope that this humble advice will be helpful to you as you prepare yourself to kickoff on your adventure. About the Author : Mike Scott is a author and experienced cruise director.
