A vacation should be a fun and exciting experience and not asource of stress. The key to making your vacation relaxing, funand hassle free is to pay attention and learn how to travelsmart.
Everyone who has traveled has at least one or two horror storiesto tell. From losing a wallet or having it stolen, to spending alittle bit too much at the roulette wheel, every seasonedtraveler has experienced their share of vacation problems. Thekey is to take these travel issues in stride, and not let themruin your long planned vacation.
One of the most important considerations when traveling ismoney, saving it and protecting it. Saving money, buy selectingthe cheapest accommodations and airfare you can find, is a greatway to make even the most limited travel budget go further.
To protect your travel money, most seasoned travelers and travelexperts recommend keeping valuables in a hidden wallet or travelpouch, either wrapped around your waist under your clothes orhung around your neck under your shirt.
Another great way to protect your money and reduce the chance oftheft is to keep the majority of your cash in the hotel safe, taking only enough out each day to pay for small incidentalpurchases. Use credit cards for meals, lodging, admissions, souvenirs and other larger purchases. Credit cards providevaluable consumer protection and the best currency exchangerates as well.
Of course even the most well protected wallet can be lost orstolen, and there is one very valuable tip to keep a lost orstolen wallet from bringing your vacation to an abrupt end. Manyseasoned travelers have learned to pack an extra wallet in theirsuitcase or backpack. This wallet will contain only a creditcard or two and perhaps an ATM card. That way, if you lose

yourprimary wallet, you still have access to ready cash with whichto finish your trip.
It is also a good idea to make an itinerary, and leave it athome with family members or a trusted friend. Having familymembers and friends know your itinerary will help them contactyou in case of an emergency at home. It is also a good idea tokeep copies of your identification papers, travelers checknumbers, and a photocopy of your passport, at home.
One word about the passport - I always take mine with me, evenwhen traveling within the United States. The reason I do that isthat the passport provides an additional piece of information, and that is important in the event your wallet is lost or stolenwhile on vacation. Since it is impossible to board a plane thesedays without id, having an extra form of id with you can makeyour life a lot easier.
It is also important to make several copies of your importanttravel documents, including flight reservations, hotelconfirmations, rental car receipts, etc. Put each copy in adifferent place - one or two in different parts of the suitcaseor backpack, one in your back pocket, one in your purse orcarryon, etc. Also record important phone numbers in the addressbook of your cell phone for easy access.
It is also important to carry basic medical information, such asyour blood type, allergy information and information aboutmedications you are taking, with you while on vacation. It isalso important to carry your medications in your carryon luggageor purse, and never to pack them in a checked suitcase.
